How to actually listen when she's venting

Communication3 min read

When she walks through the door and immediately unloads about her boss, your instinct is probably to solve the problem. You hear a logistical challenge, you map out a solution, and you present it. It's efficient.

It's also almost always the wrong move.

The urge to fix is powerful, but when her emotional content arrives, she's usually not looking for a project manager. She's looking for a mirror. She's testing whether you'll catch what she's throwing.

Catch the emotion before you touch the problem.

Think of it as a bid. When she brings something to you, she's making a bid for connection. If you immediately redirect to a solution, you've missed the bid. You caught the ball and threw it out the window.

Just catch it. "That sounds incredibly frustrating." "I can see why that ruined your afternoon." That's the whole move. Once the emotion is acknowledged, the problem can be solved, or, more often, doesn't need to be solved at all.

Goose helps you act on this.
